A water heater pilot light can go out for a number of reasons. Air in the gas line can cause a pilot to go out. A safety feature of the water heater should stop the gas flow but you’ll still want to relight the pilot so you can continue to have hot water.
Although the procedure may vary slightly by manufacturer, the following will give you a pretty good idea of how to relight a pilot yourself.

A properly maintained water heater can last well past the average life expectancy stated by the manufacturer. Dirt and sediment can naturally accumulate in the bottom of your water tank, which can reduce the efficiency of the appliance and shorten its useful life. To avoid problems, you may want to empty and flush your tank annually.
The following procedure is simple and can be completed quickly with just a hose and bucket.
